Music is one of the oldest arts in Ukraine. Ukrainians are known as a musical people with a lot of folk-songs. Now there are 6 opera houses, 3 operettas and many song-and-dance groups. Ukrainian orchestras, choirs and performers often appear on tours in Europe, Asia and the USA. The pop music is rather developed in Ukraine. Pop singers like T. Povalii, I. Shynkaruk, S. Rotaru, and I. Bilyk are known in Ukraine and abroad.
The oldest paintings in Ukraine are frescoes. Some of them are about a thousand years old. Famous frescoes of St. Sophia Cathedral in Kiev attract many tourists from Ukraine and abroad. Some Ukrainian painters are also famous all over the world. Among them is Ilia Repin (1844— 1930). Many of his works show his love to Ukraine, its people, and its history. Among them there is a famous painting "The Zhaporozhian Cossacks write a letter to the Turkish Sultan". He also painted many portraits of Russian and Ukrainian famous people, like T. Shevchenko, M. Kostomarov and others.

Ukrainian theatre became popular during the 19th century. From the end of the 18th century Ukrainian landlords organized theatres at their estates. The Ukrainian plays were performed by serfs. Nowadays the Ukrainian theatre is also very popular. Among theatre stars are B. Stupka, A. Rogovtseva. V. Zaklunna and others. Ukrainian ballet is known on every continent. 28.10.2020

Task1. Read and write down in your exercise books

                                    The Present Continuous Tense

The Continuous Tenses утворюється з допоміжного дієслова to be у відповідній часовій формі (Present, Past, Future) та дієприкметника теперішнього часу (Present Participle) основного дієслова.

to give — giving

to make — making

tu run — running

to sit — sitting

to begin — beginning

to lie — lying

to die — dying

(The Present Continuous Tense)

Who is reading a book in that room? —

2. The Present Continuous

She is writing a new book. —

We are going to the theatre tonight. —.

I'm going to spend ту holidays in the Crimea.

5. У Present Continuous не вживаються дієслова to see, to know, to hear, to feel, to want, to like, to understand та деякі інші.

                                                    (The Past Continuous Tense)

1. Форми the Past Continuous утворюються аналогічно до форм the Present Continuous, але допоміжне дієслово to be ставиться у формі the Past Indefinite (was, were).

2. The Past Continuous

а) точним позначенням часу, наприклад, at that moment у той момент; at that time у той час, at 7 o'clock yesterday вчора о 7-й годині:

At 7 o'clock we were listening to the radio. —

Не was not reading a journal at that moment.

It was raining when I went out.

Past Indefinite.

                                         (The Future Continuous Tense)

1. Форми the Future Continuous утворюються аналогічно до форм the Present Continuous, але до допоміжного дієслова to be додається will.

2. Майбутній тривалий час означає тривалу дію в майбутньому: at five o'clock, at that (this) time, at noon (дія відбуватиметься в певний час у майбутньому):

At this time tomorrow my mother will be waiting for me at the school gate. —

They will be translating the text from two till four. —

3. У розмовній мові замість shall not і will not вживаються скорочені форми shan't і won't:

I shan't be speaking.

At 10 o'clock we shall be watching a TV program. —

І shall be working when you come back.

The American school system is divided into elementary school and secondary school. If you are moving to the US, it is good to be familiar with the general setup of schools when it comes to grade levels, hours, terms and services.

Children usually start school in kindergarten or first grade (at age 5 or 6) and complete school after 12th grade (at age 17 or 18). Occasionally, a student must repeat a grade because of prolonged absence or poor grades, although this is rare. The 12 years following kindergarten are usually organised under a ‘5-3-4 plan’ where grades 1 to 5 are elementary (primary) school, grades 6 to 8 are junior high or middle school and grades 9 to 12 are high school. There can be variations on this plan, eg. a 6-3-3 or 6-2-4 plan, but the basic state-decreed curriculum for each grade remains the same. Usually, a student has one teacher for all major subjects during elementary school and a different teacher for each subject during secondary school.
Although in some states a child can legally leave school at 16 (known as dropping out), this is generally discouraged (the job prospects for anyone in the US without a high school diploma are not great) and the vast majority of students stay at high school until 18.

School hours and terms

The school year usually runs from early September until May or June (nine months) and is divided into ‘quarters’ or terms (semesters). Most schools use a semester system made up of two sessions: fall (September to December) and spring (January to May). Some schools use the quarter system, which comprises three sessions: fall (September to December), winter (January to March) and spring (March to May or June).
School vacation dates are published by schools well in advance, thus allowing parents plenty of time to schedule family holidays. Normally, parents aren’t permitted to withdraw children from classes, except for visits to a doctor or dentist, when the teacher should be informed in advance whenever possible.
The school day in elementary and high schools can vary but usually runs from 8 am to 3 pm or 3.30 pm, with an hour for lunch. In high school, students take six one-hour classes or four 90-minute classes (with ten-minute breaks between classes). Extra-curricular activities and sports are scheduled after school hours.

Provisions and meals at school

It’s common for children in elementary school to take a packed lunch to school, although some schools allow children who live close to the school to go home for lunch. Most elementary and secondary schools provide a self-service cafeteria where children may purchase lunch, and some children receive free lunches under local welfare programmes.
High school students are provided with lockers where they can store their books and other possessions. Schools provide bike racks for students who bike to school and high schools also provide student parking lots.

British Private Education

Seven per cent of British schoolchildren go to private schools called independent schools. There are 2,400 independent schools and they have been growing in number and popularity since the mid-1980's.
Parents pay for these schools, and fees vary from about 250 pounds a term for a private nursery to 3,000 pounds a term or more for a secondary boarding school. Most independent schools are called prep (preparatory) schools because they prepare the children for the Common Entrance Exam which they take at the age of 11. This exam is for entry into the best schools.
The most famous schools are called "public schools" and they have a long history and traditions. It is often necessary to put your child's name on a waiting list at birth to be sure he or she gets a place, Children of wealthy or aristocratic families often go to the same public school as their parents and their grandparents. Eton is the best known of these schools.
The majority of independent secondary schools, including public schools, are single-sex, although in recent years girls have been allowed to join the sixth forms of boys' schools. Independent schools also include religious schools (Jewish, Catholic, Muslim etc.) and schools for ethnic minorities.
